Do you know of any holiday music that’s good for bellydance..? Whether Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Pagan or secular, anything’s good. I’m interested a; in general, but also b; for my podcast. :) (And no, I don’t play anything that’s not either already podsafe, or musician/band approved. ;) For instance, -this- is a greeeeeat example of a bellydance-able holiday piece. ^_^ LOVE Loreena’s work. *beams* But alas, I cannot podcast it, because while some musicians just up and say “okay!” or “no,” others have biiiig long legal things to deal with, and that’s waaay over my little podcast’s head. So.. I’ll just have to be content w/sharing her music here, w/you all. ;))
SO, aaaanyhoo, podsafe or no, what moves you during the holidays..? :D
Hey guys! I just got back from San Francisco (stayed there for TG & had a LOVELY time ^_^), and wanted to let y’all know that all my prints on Etsy are on sale today, should anyone wanna take advantage of my Black Friday / Cyber Monday discount. :)
Until midnight tonight, everything in my Etsy store is 20% off. :) Just use coupon code “BLACKFRIDAY” at checkout, and BOOM, there ya go. ^_^
I have bellydancers of all kinds there, and more’s always comin’, so I hope you’ll like what ya find. ^_^ (And of course, if you have any requests, I’d be happy to make you your own pieces, should you want something especially for you. ^_^) Oh! Also, since not everything I have in print-form is quiiite up on Etsy yet, if you pop by my Notes section on FB and see a print you’d like to buy, I’ll be happy to either list it or sell it to you directly, & still give you the 20% discount. :)
Hope you guys are all doing well, and that everyone’s Thanksgiving was faboo. ^_^
Squeeeee!!! The video from my latter performance on October 19th is in!! Yaaay! *bounces around the room* This was the spooky improv. piece I made this stuff for, and even though I know the performance was not exactly perfect, I’m still really happy with how it turned out. ^_^
It -felt- good, which was one nice thing. Even though I was nervous about traversing the stage (as it was my first time seeing it/being there), and even though I knew I was blanking on a few key aspects of movement I’d wanted to include in the piece (thank you nerves), the nerves were still not HALF as bad as they normally are, and I was -really- getting into and having fun w/the character, playing off the energy of the audience, and that was a big part of what I think did it. :) Plus some of the techniques I’ve been working on that I learned in Alia’s 90-Day Dance Party Challenge made a big difference, too. She’s got some great techniques for improv. and stage fright that really can help a great deal. ^_^ And looking back on it now via this video, I’m actually okay with what I see, which is a HUGE step for me. :):) Normally I HATE watching myself dance, end up criticizing the HELL out of myself while I do, and in every other performance before this (singing or dancing- which, yes, includes the one I’d done just prior to this one, that very same day) I obsess endlessly over what went wrong, all the mistakes I made, etc. But in this case, not much of that was there, for which I am INSANELY grateful. ^_^
Part of it might be learning to look beyond the fluff when I look at myself, I think, and I know that’s a big hurdle for many of us, big or small. But part of it too, is remembering how much fun it was, what a great response I got from the crowd, the positive experience I had back stage and allll through the night that night, recollecting all the support I had from friends and family that day, and how many sweet people came up to me afterward, to tell me how much they loved my piece. ^_^ All that.. that made a huuuuge difference. But a lot of it came from inside, too. Learning to channel a bit of that nervous energy, remembering the love of the music and really getting into character those things helped a ton, too. *beams*
I think from now on I’m gonna work with character a lot more in my pieces. The all come from me in one way or another, but being able to channel that energy really does seem to not only help the piece develop, but also help w/stage fright and other issues. :) Oh! And speaking of! The character btw, for those who don’t know, was an evil river fae. The scary, grab-you-down-and-eat-you kind from the oooooold, cautionary folktales told back in the days looong before Disney made faerie-tales anything but scary. ;) And for those who might know of her, this character was loosely adapted from the stories of Jenny Greenteeth, and made into a US, bayou-dwelling version. ;D.
As for the outfit, all it is is a green skirt I already had, a thriftstore dress that I cut up and made into a top and slitted overskirt combo, various layers of Creepy Cloth (in green- I loved how they looked like lichen! :D), a tummy cover, a weird mossy bit of trim I bought at a fabric store, annnnd all the accessories I made for this piece. :) (Which included two necklaces, two bracelets, a pair of earrings, and the belt.) It’s hard to see here, but the accessories featured everything from teeth and fingers to eyeballs, mice, fish and bones. ^_^
Anyway, enough of me prattling on. I hope you enjoy my work, ‘cause I had a blast! ^_^
Instead of always wishing for our bodies to be different, let’s switch things up a a bit: Rather than thinking on a body part you wish you could change, which body part do you wish you could ADVERTISE..?? :D ..What part of you helps you do something -marvelous- or remarkable, memorable or enchanting in this dance..?
Are your wrists sublime..? Do they make your floreos look elegant, dramatic and chic? Or do your toes always point just so..? Can you do backbends like nobody’s business? Do you love showing those sassy shoulders..? Can your thighs hold up to an infinite amount of dishwasher shimmies..? Or do you have eyes that entrance the audience every time..? Do you like showing off your neck..? Doing fabulous hair flips..? Do tell! What body part do YOU love the most, for what it HELPS you do with your dance..? What body part do you think helps you shine..? :D
I think we oughtta start focusing on the GOOD things in life, and in our dance, rather than damning ourselves and our every flaw all the time. Waaaay too many of us concentrate on our drawbacks, our mistakes, or the things we’d want to have more “perfect” if we could. (In our dances, our bodies, and our lives.) But that often does little more than make us miserable and feel like failures, or keep us from doing what we want or love to do. (Not to mention from achieving much of anything. If you know you’re gonna fial because of x flaw ahead of time, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, because you don’t LET yourself win. You’re so busy obsessing about your perceived shortcomings and flaws that you you’re more distracted than in th emoment, and thus sabotage yourself from TRULY giving whatever you’re doing your best! Therefore boom, you fall, and all you have left is “see? I fell.” :(() So why keep wasting time on regrets, hatefulness against ourselves (and each other), and start -celebrating- the good stuff? Even the plainest of faces have SOMETHING beautiful about them- inside AND out. Maybe it’s their smile, their hands, the turn of their knees, or their ability to choreograph stuff that we only can capture in our dreams. :) No matter how lovely or dazzling though, ALL of us have ways in which our bodies shine. Let’s find them, adore them, and celebrate them! XD
So, how ‘bout you?? What do YOU love about.. you?? What aspect of your body do YOU consider a gift? What part of you do you most find to be a blessing in your dance..?? :D
No, it’s not bellydance, but this is a -great- example of how dance in general can do so much more than just entertain. This burlesque performance (note the style please; burlesque often ending in some form of nudity, so please censor your environment accordingly) speaks a loud, resounding message; done with artfulness, passion, courage and grace, and I love it. Next time you hear a song that moves you for all the right reasons, don’t be afraid to put all that raw emotion on the stage. That spirit, that fire, is exactly what people are looking for, and what they will resonate with, no matter what your dance or music style/form. ♥ ♥ ♥
Eeee! Lookie lookie lookie what I have access to again- AT LAST!!! XD *bounces off the walls* I HAS THE INTERNETS!!! *’splodes*
And now that I -have- those interwebbly things, I can share with you a few of the photos that were taken of my performances last month, on October 19th before I moved! XD
Both sets of event photos are courtesy of Robert Morrow (he says his camera didn’t do so well in the evening shots, but I still love them, blurry or no), and took place at Roanoke Pagan Pride Day 2013 in the daytime, and later, just a hop, skip & a jump away, at Haflaween 2013 at night!
Thank you to all the super-sweet people who came out and cheered me on, as well as to those kind souls who came up to me post each peformance and lent their kind words to my spirit about the pieces that I’d performed that day. You guys all ROCK. ^_^
Now, I just hope to get some more potos and videos of the events, ‘cause I haven’t seen much of them either! *lol*
Hope you guys like!
Oooh look! I has internets for a minnit! XD (I’m at a local Starbucks, waiting for my cell phone to be repaired, and chomping at the BIT for my cable/internet installation, which is coming this Sunday. XD) And while I’m here, since my posts have been so few and far between lately (oh please, dear GODS let the internet come Sunday!!), I’mma give you something of -quality- to help keep me and this little blog in your memories, so you don’t forget us until we’re back. ^_^ (Wheeen we’ll probably deluge you with a wash of posts as I catch up, hopefully not making you want to forget me again. *lol*)
Here’s Rachel Brice doing a -lovely- collaboration for a truly nifty video, featuring gorgeous, spiffy music, and Rachel in two, count ‘em TWO of her Epicly Badass outfits. ^_^
Hi guys! Just wanted y’all to know I’m still alive n’ thinking of ya! I’ve successfully made the leap from one coast to the other, but as of now I still has no cable or interwebz, so we’ll have to deal w/my semi-craptastic phone for now.
This was me last week at my Pagan Pride Day performance, and there’s more of that day on the way! (zi still haven’t figgered out how to do multiple photos on the same post w/the app yet.). But I hope you lke, & haven’t forgotten me yet! <3
Hey all! Guess what..? I just found out that ShimmyMob is holding a contest for its next event choreographer! (And those who submit entries are -not- required to participate in this coming year’s event, or to have participated in events past to be eligible to win! Squee!! XD) So to all my choreo goddesses out there, go take a peek!
..How -wonderful- would it be if someone non-traditional in body type, size or dis/ability (or a dancer who was truly empathetic of n’ friendly w/such folks) were to win this contest??? *beams*
C’mon beautiful divas, FLY to this, fly! Fly!! XD
I’m sorry.. I can’t help it! *inserts silly, Hallow-Oz-related gif here*
