Oh yeah- but before I go, would you like a preview of what someone might get, once they win this li’l blog’s latest contest..?
I recently realized that I had next to -no- brown-skinned dancers in my art portfolio (aside from a few photographs, and one drawing, where she appears amidst a troupe- which is, imho SO nowhere near enough). So it seemed -high time- to make one, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to get started. :) There’s more to ‘er than what you see here, and she’s not quiiite done yet, but she’s well on her way, and I hope you like. :)
(For those w/screen readers, or others who just want a description; she’s got big, almond eyes, a smiling, oval face, permed hair in front, and natural hair accented w/one long, thick braid in the back. She’s wearing a halter-style coin bra top, and a hair adornment w/dangly bits that extend from behind her ear to a large rose hair clip, nestled in the back. It’s all in black & white, w/the original being on 8.5 x 11” paper, and was done in graphite/mechanical pencil. :) ♥)
The winner of the contest will get the first print of this little lady, and the deadline is whenever I wake up today/tomorrow/Sat. (i.e., June 1st; so get your entries in soon, if you wanna win a free copy). :) All it takes is an Ask/PM w/a pro and a con about this blog, and you’re in. ^_^
Now, see y’all when I wake up, ‘cause I am a SLEEPY girl! *yawns*
Today, our first Geek Friday post is a real doozy! Meet Rose Lee, who presents an ADORABLE transformation here, with one -very- meaningful moral (that I think LOTS of people here will resonate with ;)). ^_^ Plus, this is one super fun performance, with LOTS of energy, personality, and oomph! ^_^
-And to round things off, she’s even got an article about it, which you can find here. :) ..Want to know what it’s all about first..? Welllll, here’s a bit of a teaser!
(And from what I can tell, this was 2 years ago- which means- she’s probably -leagues- better these days! o.O I wonder what she’s up to now..? No doubt, it’s gonna be ROCKIN’. ^_^)
Hope you guys enjoy, and happy Geek Friday! ^_^
Hey all! 2 quick things, since it seems I’ve suddenly sprouted 50 new followers: *bounces around wildly and waves to all the nice new peoples*
1. There’s just a few days left to get in your entry for my most recent blog contest! Come Saturday, June 1, I’ll be going through my Inbox to see who will win a brand new piece of ORIGINAL bellydance-related art, created by yours truly! ^_^ All it takes to enter is a message/PM/Ask w/YOUR thoughts on a Pro and a Con of this blog. You can talk about a single post, about the blog all together, or even something as simple as how I sign off on posts. ;) So send in one Pro and one Con via PM/Ask, and that’s it, you’re entered to win! :D
-And btw, entries will be judged at random, NOT by contents, so don’t worry about saying something that’ll offend me, and thus ruining your chances to win. I want YOUR feedback to make this blog better, so let me hear from you. ^_^ That way I get -your- valuable input, and -you- get new art! It’s a win-win. ^_^ Just remember to get it in before I get up Sat., June 1! ♥
2. As some you may or may not know, I run a li’l bellydance-inspired podcast, called Eclectica. :) And since I’m putting the next show together (which should be out by the 5th of each month, or so I plan ;)), I’d love to hear about what you think of the show, how you think it sounds (technically speaking), and especially for episodes yet to come, about what moves YOU, my fellow bellydancers. ^_^
So, what kinds of music do y’all want to hear..? Do you like Bollywood..? Dubstep? Bhangra? Hip-Hop? Do you want more traditional Middle Eastern pieces? Eclectica is open to -all kinds- of music, and all -kinds- of musicians, genres and sounds, so if you have a band you wanna hear, a song you are dead SICK of hearing, or a genre that you’d loooove to hear more of, let me know! This podcast is for -you,- my fellow bailaristas, so tell me what YOU wanna hear. ^_^
SO much love and MEGA thanks to those of you who so kindly support these projects, and Hi to all you booful readers out there again, old and new! I hope you’re ALL likin’ what you see & hear. ^_^
Last but not least, we have Amira, with a combination that I’m guessing many of us Star Wars fans and bellydancers have pondered- at least once or twice. ^_^ Her Leia is pretty spot-on as far as I can tell, and it is WONDERFUL to see an actual bellydancer do this idea justice. I’ve no doubt that folks have tried this before (given how bellydance-friendly the Slave Leia costume looks), so it’s great to know that at least one woman out there is doing it up well. ^_^ Oh, how I’d love to do my own version, someday! :D
And that m’loves, is it for me for today, and for -this- edition of Geek Friday vids. If you wanna submit something, suggest something, or otherwise give me evil, nefarious ideas, feel free to Ask/PM me, ‘cause I would -love- to hear from y’all. ^_^ Merry Weekending!
Next up, we’ve got a little Star Wars Saidi, courtesy of Zafirah! I love how she’s melded Leia’s white dress/uniform w/the Saidi galabeya, and how she works TWO light sabers at one point! :D
How cute is this?? ^_^
Inspired by Mother’s Day. :) I hope you guys like! ^_^
Next for our Geek Friday video games theme, we’ve got this BADASS concoction by 2 of the members of Raks Geek, a troupe that SPECIALIZES in geeky bellydance! ^_^
Using the game Assassin’s Creed as inspiration, this is a -chill inducing- Fusion sword piece that’s beautifully staged, artfully choreographed and delightfully dark; with sharp movements & dramatic, loverly accents. ^_^ I positively adore this piece, and wouldn’t mind learning it m’self! ^_^
In fact, this reminds me a lot of Night, the president of our former bellydancing club at RU. She’s a BIG fan of computers, anime, and other awesomely geeky stuff, loved our nifty swords (that we got at MissBellydance.com- in BLACK XD), and often wears costuming like this- as well as a hoodie in her “daily duds.” ^_^ (Plus, her dancing style is somewhat similar in its form & intent, so I can -totally- see her pulling something like this off. ^_^) I bet she’d PLATZ over the costuming, choreo & intensity here, too. ^_^
So for all my darkling divas, video gaming vixens, and especially you, Ms. Night, this is for you. ^_^ I hope I get to do something like THIS w/you someday, ‘cause it is WICKED! ♥♥
Now, get ready for one strong & super badass sword piece, and hold on to your scimitars (carefully ;)), ‘cause it’s gonna be one deadly ride-with an awesome soundtrack!. ;D
I dunno if I’ve posted this before, but if I have, it’s so good, it’s worth posting again. :) It’s short and very sweet, well-written and inspiring like mad. ^_^
Plus, it features a bellydancer (w/what I believe is a milder case of cerebral palsy) who has done AMAZING things w/her own pursuit of this dance. Check her out, ‘cause Neena Nour is a -faboo- dancer! ^_^)
If you’re physically challenged through disability or injury, you may think dancing is beyond your grasp. Belly dance may offer the solution!
Happy Mother’s Day, everyone! ♥♥♥
(Jamila Salimpour; the epic lady who helped popularize and establish Middle Eastern dance in the US, alongside her daughter Suhaila, who is carrying on her mother’s teachings into the 21st century via her own dance school, w/lessons available IRL as well as online. :))
