I have a bunch of ideas for music that I could post as suggestions for Hallowe’en performance/dance use. Would anyone want a Spooky-Song-A-Day posts..? (Yanno, w/vids containing said spooky music suggestions..?)
They could be used for performances, for your Hallo-Haflas, for parties, or just for gettin’ down in your livin’ room in swanky spooky style. :) So, would anyone like..?

Is it wrong that when I see this, I think “ooooh! Ideas for my coming livingroom!”? XD
I literally have been thinking about not buying trad livingroom furniture, since I won’t have a big apartment w/multiple rooms to divvy up practice space in. My original thoughts were to wait to get pieces in, bit by bit, until I find pieces that I -really- love, instead of just buying Stuff to Have Stuff. ..But about a week or so ago, the idea donned on me..: ”Yanno, you -could- just get or make that hideaway entertainment center you’ve been wanting, & refrain from getting the livingroom furniture entirely (since I barely use couches anyway, thanks to my vision & needing to be close to the TV), and just make your whole li’l livingroom a dance studio…”
..Is it a bad sign that my eyes started to gleam maniacally and a strange cackle emanated from somewhere nearby when this thought occurred..? ;D
More and more I’ve been falling in love w/the idea, ‘cause for the past year or so I have been -so sick- of having nowhere to practice. So this just adds fuel to the fires. ^_^ I’m totally going “oooooh, mirrrrorrrs! And NO FREAKING CARPET!! XDXD” *lol* But in all actuality, I really could just drape my LR windows in luscious, light-blocking red velvet curtains, cover the walls in mirrors like a funhouse p0rn0 set (as in LOTS of mirrors, nothing else, you naughty people, you), lavish the floor w/a few skooshy pillows here n’ there, maybe rescue a sexy little low table for a place to have tea and biscuits in the morning.. or maybe hookah at night.. and.. and.. and.. *drools* voila! OOOH! Plus I’d need some fun materials n’ art on the walls, maybe a swank chandelier or two, and I’ve got my own luxurious Café Danza Marviliosa! ^_^ Squee!! *happy shimmies* Arright, bring on the decorating crew!! *bounce bounce*
Though the person in the article refers generally to musicians, aside from the identifiers about “playing,” “musicians,” etc., this could very well just as easily work for dancers, singers, and other types of performers who may struggle w/self-confidence issues. And since I looked it up trying to find keys to boost my own confidence & much of it sounded good to me, I thought I’d pass it on. :) Hope this helps some of you, too. :)

I’m pondering new art possibilities (been thinking of doing a big girl w/an uncovered belly, as well as a bloke bellydancer or two lately), but I’d like to hear from my bellydancing family as well, so: Have you any other materials or subject-matters, styles of dress, or types of dance for some new bellydance art that you’d like to request..? Maybe a troupe or a certain type of person, prop, or costume that you’d like to see depicted..? Or is someone eager to see dancers of other abilities, ethnicities, or places of origin illustrated..? ..The polls are now open, and I’d love to hear from you. :)
Okay, no, this isn’t bellydance, but there’s a reason why I’m putting this here: I have no idea why her hair is wet, and I -think- she might be the same person I just saw a scary “sexy Pakistani mujra” from, but I like this for one big reason; look at all the EXPRESSIONS she uses here!!
Whether you (or I) like her dancing or not, she reminds me of how much potential we as dancers have for telling a story- just w/our FACES! XD Depending on whatever mood we want to express, we can make the exact same beats be angry, proud, sassy, happy, sad, forlorn, serious or silly. We can take our audience through a whoooole epic story (and I do mean that in the traditional sense of the word- as in grand tales like the Iliad, the Odyssey, etc.), just by the way we let our facial expressions augment our dances. :) And what fun it could be to play with that- not only in our practice time, but on stage! Wanna switch something up..? Is a certain rhythm getting kind of old, or are you feeling like you’ve done the same move over and over..? (Which often happens if nerves hit when you’re improv’ing.) Try switching gears w/the spirit you give to the dance. ^_^ And don’t be afraid to either just “put it on” if you have to- get silly with it if the situation allows. But even better, if you can, why not try and really be IN that moment..? Why not try and really feel it! :D
For example, one of my favorite bits in an extended drum solo is when a dancer does that INSANELY fast shimmy, for like 37hrs. *lol* You know, she’s been dancing for ages to begin with so you know she -must- be getting tired. But then she whips out this rock-‘em-sock-‘em bullet-speed micro-shimmy, and keeps it up while acting like it ain’t no thang..! Well I LOVE it when dancers who do this, let it go for a bit, and then a -touch- longer, and juuuust as the audience might be getting a little bit bored, she whips out w/this pantomime of checking her invisible watch, then pulling out an imaginary compact from her cleavage, checking her makeup & hair in it, then closing the compact, returning it from whence it came, and then going back to the shimmy- that she never stopped doing in the first place. ^_^ For me, it’s less about the -major- stamina she must have (although that’s there too), but more about how she gets to show a bit of comedy and personality in that moment- amid the cycle of expressions she goes through: ”Wee! Look at me! Look at what I can do!” ”Awww yeah, you know you love it!” And then to “okay, maybe this is getting a little old now” to “arright, BORED NOW!! How’s my makeup..?” And lastly, we come back around to “oh yeah! We’re still shimmying! That’s still a thing! Ohai audience!” *shimmy shimmy* ^_^
And imho, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Those 10-song full bellydance performances are a -great- chance for a dancer to show her full range of emotions on stage. That’s kinda what they’re meant for.. right..? Plus Bollywood and classical Indian dances can be -great- examples of the way one can tell stories through facial expressions & general acting while dancing. (Again, kinda the point. ;)) But you can do a whole lot just within one song, too. :) Which is why though I think this lady miiiight be going a -bit- overboard (packing a few too many moves into one “bag” at a time in such rapid succession, so to speak), I still really like this piece. Not because it’s The Best Thang Ever necessarily (though it’s FARRRR from the worst), but because she’s so animated I can’t decide whether she’s more amusing, or just bloody fascinating to watch. (All this keeping in mind that I have -no- idea what she’s saying. For all I know, the song very well could be as emotionally varied and wild as her expressions.)
So maybe next time you’re in the studio, why not play with a range of emotions while you dance to one specific piece..? Or if you ever have inklings of a story in your head when you hear a song, why not try to dance/act it out, instead of just letting it be some arbitrary (though fun) piece..? -And while you’re at it, maybe you could give different roles withIN the story a try! Like say.. be the protagonist in the story one time or through one stanza, and then be the villain the next..? It might be kinda fun to wear different hats- all through the same song. :) Or maybe you could try swinging from one emotional nuance to another within one song; like expressing a series of events. :)
Or if you wanna get silly with it, why not try letting x part of the drum beat make you happy, and then the next section make you sad? It could be a great way to get out emotional energy, and just have a laugh at yourself while you clown around, dancing. :) Or you could have a “war of the shimmies! Maybe your hips are running around w/o your control, or the “up” motions in your hips are combating the “down” ones! :D Maybe your left hip/side is your “good hip/side” and your right “bad hip/side?” Perhaps one side of you likes the audience and the other side doesn’t.. or one side’s all nice and clean and moves crisply, but the other’s all waggly and sloppy..? (Oooh, maybe there’s a Jeckyl and Hyde idea for those of you who’re looking to do a Hallowe’en hafla! :D) Or could it be your top & bottom halves warring against each other.. pulling you around the stage..? :D -Why not? Let’s play! ^_^
Granted, I may be the only one here, but I think it’s fun to flesh out characters, develop stories, and really get into my music (and you guessed it, be a li’l silly ;)). I’ve always liked putting backgrounds to characters in games, naming & thinking up whole back-stories for the people I draw or write about… Sometimes I see/hear scenes in my head that a character would have experienced.. like a movie playing inside my mind… (But I think lots of folks do that.. right..?) And I think whether in drawing, dance, writing or other pursuits, sometimes adding backgrounds and characterization can help give your pieces body, substance, and personality. :) It gives you a place to ground yourself from, roots to grow your imaginary attachment to a song/piece from, so you have a grounded space to really -feel- as your body illustrates a piece. :) (Beyond say just the love of a melody, an admiration for some lyrics, or that driving urge to respond to a “beat beat beat beat beat-” which are all okay, too.) Yanno..?
So today, as I go outside n’ play for a bit to enjoy this BEAUTIFUL cool weather we have, I think in addition to re-familiarizing myself w/my props on my tiny back deck, I’m gonna put on my black hat, my white hat.. maybe my ringleted blonde “maiden wig” or faux Black Bart mustache n’ monicle (all inside my own mind, of course ;)), and tell some silly stories- inside my own mind. :) Hell, maybe it’ll just be clown shoes.. buuuut it could lead to something truly epic down the road, too. ;D
This is truly spectabulous stuff. Whether you’re a Fusion, Cabaret, ATS/ITS, Tribal or Tribaret dancer, there is some seriously wonderful stuff in here. So go read, go read!! ^_^ ♥ ♥ ♥
Personal style is something I think about a lot. It is actually one of the main reasons I’m starting a dance trip around the world – to find my own style. From conversations I had recently with fellow dancers, I understood I’m not alone. so I approached some of my favorite professional dancers for advice. […]
A year or so ago I thought I’d found my new performance name (Yluriananda), but got told it was too long & complicated/hard to read/pronounce. So I got set right back on the long, tiresome road again, at a complete restart. (I’ve been searching for a new name to go by for many, many years, and now w/bellydance performance, the need has just been intensified, and made even more multi-dimensional.) So lately I’ve kinda touched on a few, and I’d love to know your thoughts.
Which one do you prefer?
Or.. do you think Yluriananda’s not that hard after all, given other bellydancers’ names, and the complexities of so many languages being involved in our “industry..?”
An Attempted Checklist of Bellydance Event Advertising
Recently someone on a forum I belong to asked a question about advertising gigs, and that got me to thinking: While definitely NOT a bellydance-gig expert, I do have a few thoughts on advertising, which were hard-won during my stint as the solo organizer of a zombie walk event in DC (3 years running, baybeee! ;D). And while I didn’t have all the access to goodies I’d hoped for when helping out w/my group in college, (a sampling of whose posters you see here), I also learned a thing or two there. :) So for those of you who feel a little lost when it comes to getting the word out about your upcoming shows, classes, or whathaveyou, I thought I’d share the little bits of info that I have to offer. :)
And that is alllll I can think of- for now. ;)
Overall, I’d say the biggest thing is to just make sure you cover as much area as possible (both electronically AND physically), and to join forces with other people whenever you can. Oh! And try to do things as far in advance as you can. People can’t plan their schedules around events they don’t know about until the last minute, so get your fliers out at LEAST a few weeks prior to your event. Plus be as thorough as you’re able (w/things like directions, event details, prices, etc.) again, as soon as possible. There’s soooo much info bombarding people nowadays 24/7, you don’t wanna get drowned out by short attention spans, people w/bigger budgets- or be forgotten by folks w/already overwrought schedules. But forgetting to give directions or an address to your venue can be just as crippling to a successful event as being nasty to people or refusing to work in more than one advertising medium, so keep your details handy and up to date, too. ;)
Mind, I don’t know all of the intricacies and delicacies of bellydance teaching/event etiquette (such as dos and don’ts of giving your time away for charity, hosting talks at universities, if you should charge for such things, etc.), and lawd knows I am no mega-marketing mogul, so I repeat; I am noooo expert. But when it comes to thinking creatively about advertising on a budget, I hope these at least help some people. :)
No MATTER what, don’t get so stressed about advertising & event logistics that you forget about why you’re doing all this; your love of DANCE. :) So do your best, but when all this stuff is done, go boogie. If you’ve done even HALF of the stuff above, you’ve bloody-well earned it. ;)
